Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli (1445 – 1510) was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance (Quattrocento). His posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th century; since then his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting, and The Birth of Venus and Primavera rank now among the most familiar masterpieces of Florentine art.

Botticelli, the artist of beautiful Madonnas as well as masterpieces of pagan and mythological scenes for the house of Medici, experienced a turning point in his creativity under the influence of the Dominican preacher Savonarola. The Lamentation of Christ is a perfect example of this with its Passion theme, its rather sparse setting and the almost choreographic harmony of its figures. SS Jerome, Paul and Peter were included, as the altarpiece was originally commissioned for the Pauline monastery in Florence.
